Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Many Britons have lost the use of their legs, if a report on motoring habits from the RAC is to be believed.

British motorists use their cars for 80% of all outings, even journeys of just a few hundred yards. Nearly 7% of car journeys are less than half a mile; more than half as many as in the mid-1970s. A quarter of journeys of up to a mile are made by car, as opposed to 15% of journeys 20 years ago. What was so different in the 1970s? Better public transport? Or maybe all those nights disco dancing to Abbe and the Bee Gees kept us fitter.
