• A South

kit Yorkshire compa

ny that has been running vehicles without an Operator's Licence and in a dangerous condition, has had its bid for a licence adjourned.

Newsupa, of Doncaster, applied to North Eastern Deputy Traffic Commissioner Mark Hinchliffe for a new four-vehicle national licence at a Leeds public inquiry.

DOT vehicle examiner Roger Page said that the company's predecessor, Newsupa, was granted a licence in February 1995; since then it had attracted eight immediate and four delayed prohibitions. The prohibition on one vehicle, which was not specified on any licence, had never been lifted, said Page. This vehicle was subsequently prohibited by the police. PC Peter Thompson of South Yorkshire police said that on 15 July he stopped a Volvo artic carrying stone on the M18 because it lacked a rear registration plate.

When he examined the vehicle he found the tailgate to be in a dangerous condition; the air suspension had failed at the offside roadwheel: one tyre was defective and there was a serious hydraulic fluid leak from the ram. No 0licence disc was displayed.

Operations manager John McGuinness maintained that the trailer concerned did not belong to the company.

Hinchliffe said a traffic examiner had reported that a vehicle carrying stone in September, which was not specified on any licence, was being driven by an unqualified driver who was unable to produce any records.

McGuinness admitted that the company had not had a licence since May 1996, when Newsupa went out of business.

Accepting the company't request for an adjournment, Hinchliffe warned that any further unauthorised use of vehicle:, would be viewed with the utmos1 gravity
