TELEVISION film shot at London's Victoria Coach Station during the railway drivers' strike gave an impression of chaos that may have discouraged future passengers. In fact, operators and station staff deserve unstinted thanks for efficiently and goodhumouredly meeting a possibly unprecedented temporary demand for long-distance travel at fares with which the railways could never compete.
If operators generally did not gain the public recognition that they merited, the National Bus Co. at least has received a tangible expression of appreciation for its Explorer scheme, This has been rewarded by a certificate of distinction in the British Tourist Authority's 1981 "Come to Britain" trophy competition.
The scheme provides for day outings by bus from more than 150 laces at bargain fares. A family of four would find it difficult to have a day out for as little as the Explorer's £4.
