confident. The first inspection went very well but once over the pit, I was warned on three counts of chafing pipes, one set of wiring stretched vulnerably tight around a body bolt and a slight oil weep round the nose bearing of the diff.
My brake test was satisfactory but only just, and the condition of one of my jumper leads to the trailer was criticised.
Half an hour with the tool kit cleared up all the points mentioned and my vehicle was passed fit. As I drove back to my garage, though, I had time for reflection. I asked myself whether the test was becoming more difficult and critical, or had I become too confident? I have, like most operators I suppose, studied the tester's manual very thoroughly and having done so, have absolutely no excuse to offer for the items the test station pointed out. It just goes to show that, although we have now been preparing vehicles for the test for almost a decade, we should still do our own inspection with the Tester's Manual in one hand.
