Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The new 16-ton-gvw Super Comet announced today retains the current engine and transmission units but incorporates many improved features, a spring-braking system, high-tensile steel frame, integral header tank and raised tilt cab.

In common with all truck models in the Leyland range, the Super Comet rigid employs a straight, high-tensile steel frame pressing which gives a weight saving over conventional mild steel frames. In its latest form the Super Comet rigid offers an improved body /payload capacity of some 140Ib.

The 9.875in.-deep side-member is flitched for tipper chassis with 0.187in. thickness inverted "L" flitch.

The 16-ton 4 x 2 Super Comet is available in wheelbases of 12ft 5.251n. and 15ft 9in. as a tipper and 15ft 9in. and 18ft 5in. as a haulage chassis.

The Super Comet is powered by the Leyland 401 engine which has an installed rating — to BS AU 141a: 1971 — of 132 bhp at 2600 rev /min, equivalent to 8.25 bhp /ton.

The Albion six-speed overdrive gearbox, type GB241 series, is retained with constant mesh on forward gears for haulage models and all-constant mesh gears on tipper chassis. The Albion GB272 10-speed .overdrive gearbox is also available as an option.

The 10.6-ton capacity Albion hubreduction rear axle has standard axle ratios of 6.933:1 for haulage machines and 7.428:1 for tippers giving maximum gradient abilities of 1 in 5 and 1 in 4.

The rationalized 6.5-ton capacity front axle which is employed on all rigid models gives a loading tolerance when plated at 6 tons which can be further increased by the fitment of 11.00-20 tyre and wheel equipment.

Burman recirculating ball steering with integral power assistance is fitted as standard equipment.

Total brake lining area is increased to 734.5 sq in. by fitting larger front shoes under the rationalization programme.

The restyled Ergomatic cab has been raised 5.5in. above standard height — in common with Lynx, Bison and Buffalo models — giving improved approach angles which are particularly beneficial for tipper models working in off-highway conditions. An hydraulic tilt mechanism is available as an optional extra.

The Super Comet 24-ton-gcw 4 x 2 tractive-unit has a 9ft 6in. wheelbase and plated axle weights of front 5.35 tons and rear 10.6 tons Chassis frame members are identical to the Lynx 26-ton tractive-unit.

The 6.54-litre Leyland 410 turbocharged engine is fitted in conjunction with a 15in.-diameter clutch and Albion six-speed over-drive gearbox. Burman recirculating bail steering is standard but power assistance is available as an option.

A three-line, full-air system with load-sensing valve in the primary circuit and hand-operated spring secondary brakes on front tractor and trailer axles is specified giving a brake lining area of 734.5 sq in. Spring parking units operate on both tractor axles.

The new Bear range, which replaces the previous LAD cab model, is intended to complement the existing Bison 24-ton rangl It includes many of the premium features c the Bison but because of the smaller, le powerful 400 series engine /transmissio offers an additional 4cwt payload.

It will enable operators to specif six-wheel chassis to operate at 24 tons gnw in the Bear and Bison ranges with a choic of maximum power or maximum payloa and with a high-degree of interchangeabilit of chassis components.

The Bear is available in wheelbases 13ft Oin., I 4ft lin., 16ft 6in. and 18ft 1.5ii The chassis has straight throug 11.875in.-deep side-members and bolte construction.

The Leyland 410 turbocharged engine used for the first time in a produetic vehicle in the UK — although this engir has been previously used in Finnisl manufactured SISU trucks. The 6.54-lit, six-cylinder unit develops 144 bhp at 26( rev /min (BS AU 141a; 1971) and maximui torque of 355 lb ft at 1600 rev /min.

Transmission is via a constant me! Albion type GB241 series gearbox, 15in.-diameter clutch, and an Albin huh-reduction bogie rated at 18 tons. third differential lock is incorporated in t leading axle. The front axle is t rationalized 6.5-ton capacity design plat. at 6 tons.

Bison suspension is also fitted to the Be with semi-elliptic springs, hydraulic dampe at the front and the Albion four-spri non-reactive rear suspension.

Full air brakes with total area of 1004 in. have fixed cam sliding shoes on the frc axle and one leading, one trailing shoe each rear axle. Fail safe spring parking a secondary brakes are provided on both re axles.
