Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

.A. deputation from the Perthshire Highland District Committee recently waited on Sir Henry Maybury, of the Ministry of Transport, in Edinburgh, to place before him certain particulars with regard to the reconstruction of the great north road from Blair Atholl to Inverness. The delegates drew attention to the fact that no provision was being made for the relaying of the road 'bottoming." It was pointed out that this was a serious omission, as the highway in question, being one of the many made by General Wade, had never had a thorough "sole " in any way sufficient to bear modern vehicular traffic.

Sir Henry Maybury, in reply, stated that, of the many roads dealt with by the Ministry in England and Scotland, this was the first occasion on which the details of the official plans had been seriously or adversely criticised. This

might betoken increased vigilance on the part of the Perthshire authority, but he was not sure if it was in any degree complimentary to the skill and intelligence of thi very efficient staff which he had the honour to control. No guarantee could be given, he continued, that the bed of the road would be completely reconstructed throughout its whole length, but the proposal would certainly receive very careful consideration and would be carried into effect whenever and wherever it was considered necessary. The schedules for the "Highland Road" would be issued immediately.
