Could •You tell me What the correct procedure is for completing record books as this is not part of Army procedure?

And as my service time ends in a couple of months, I wish also to have some idea of trailer lengths and axle weight laws. AThe keeping of drivers' hours is governed by the Drivers' Hours (Goods Vehicles) (Keeping of Records) Regulations 1970 Statutory Instrument 1970 No. 123.

In general, any driver of a vehicle which is subject to operators' licensing as laid down in Part V of the Transport Act 1968 must observe drivers' hours regulations and keep records. Because in your capacity as an Army driver, you do not drive vehicles subject to operators' licensing it is not necessary for you to keep a record book. On the other hand, road safety would be properly served only if the hours rules were observed. In your part-time job, however, you do need to keep records and observe drivers' hours. Your employer should instruct you on how to do this.

to do this.

However, you should obtain from the Department of the Environment its free booklet entitled A guide to goods vehicle drivers' hours and records which will make the legislation more plain.

The size of trailers and maximum axle and gross weights are provided for in the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973. It is not known whether you are using the word "trailer" to include semitrailers, but if you mean only drawbar trailers Regulation 68 states briefly that the overall length of a trailer shall not exceed 7 metres (22ft 111/2in) or with not less than four wheels and fulfilling certain other conditions, 12 metres (39ft 4.44in). The maximum axle weights vary according to the type of vehicle and its axle spread.
