Siegfried er gave details of two important notive diesel engine developments he and his design team had cornI recently. At the same time, Dr. 'er confirmed that, although M.A.N. working on a diesel-fuel version of Wankel non-reciprocating engine, were big problems yet to be overand that it was quite impossible to when a commercially successful n would be evolved. One of the important developments to the normal range of M.A.N. M-type engines, which were designed by Dr. Meurer some 10 years ago, is that changes to the breathing have been carried out. as a result of which h.h.p. increases of up to 23 per cent have beef achieved. The result is that this extra power is produced at reduced peak pressures and specific fuel consumption, whilst smoking tendencies are reduced also. These high efficiency engines are known as the HM series.

A second design break-through concerns M.A.N. turbocharged engines, the blowers for which are of M.A.N. construction also. A " peak-pressure governing device has been developed which in effect by-passes the blower at engine speeds above those at which maximum torque is given. This means that the air output of the blower can be increased at low engine revs, to give high torque without smoke, whilst at higher speeds the air flow is automatically reduced. Lower peak pressures and fuel consumption result, although higher b.m.e.p.s are made use of—over 160 p.s.i.
