WHILST the motorbus section of the tramways department of the 'Keighley Corporation has consistently shown a surplus each year since the inauguration of the department in 1922, the working of the trolley-buses, which have superseded the tramways service. in the centre of the town, havo not yet had a favourable balance. Trolley vehicles took. the place of the town service of tramway ears at the end of 1024, but in the -accounts the figures of an old railless service to a number of outr-districts . -have been incorporated, and annual payments to clear .oft the debt on these superseded services will

be continued until 1932.

The debt on the old tramways undertaking Is also being paid oft by annual Lrharges, but this is being kept as a separate account and will be cleared by 1930. On the old tramways actount a sum, of £5,753 remains to be wiped oft, £2,1.82 hating been paid from the borough fund accounts during the past year to meet the annual obligation. The Amount Of debt 'outstanding on the old Cedes trolley vehicles run by the Keig,hley authorities is £8,845.

The trolley-bus section of the undertaking showed an adverse balance on the net ":revenue account amounting to £3,191; following a-loss of £2,858 in the preceding year. On the. other hand, the motorbuses showed a. profit of £2,326, this comparing with 11,883 in 1925-6, £3,846 in 1924-5, £1,471 in 1923-11, and £1,640 in 1922-3. The total working expenses for the buses amounted to 128,094; the principal items being traffic expenses, £10,950; general expenses,

£2,317; general repairs and maintenance, £7,290; and power expenses £7,580. The total income amounted to £34,840, leaving a balance of 16,746 to be carried to the net revenue account. The net revenue account shows a payment of 14,147 from revenue account and £272 bank interest.

This sum has been paid into the

motorbus reserve fund, which, after the payment of a sum of £1,549 transferred to the trolley-has net revenue account,' F now • stands" at £4,629. No details . of the running costs per mile are given in the accounts for the motorbuses, but these figures are given for the trolleybuses. During the year the capital expenditure on the motorbus system increasedfrom £23,764 to £28,532.

The total expenditure as shown by -the, revenue account of the trolley-bus -section amounted to £16,119, or 12.990d. per vehicle-mile, and the totalrevenue -to £18,603, or 15.065d. per vehicle-mile, these figures comparing with 12.3776. and 13.763d. respectively in the preceding year. The principal items of expenditure were as follow :—Traffic expenses, /0,109 (7.341d. per vehicle-mile, compared with 6.856d. in the proceding year) ; general expenses, £2,198 (1.772d., compared with 1.414d.) ; •general repairs and mainteaance 12,580 (2.079d., compared with 2.1646.) ; and power expeMes, £2,230 (1.798d., compared with 1.9436. -in the preceding year). This leavesa balance 'of 12,574 to be carried to the netrevenue account, the sum being equal to 2.0756. per vehicle-mile.

The total working expenses for the trolley-buses have been reduced by 12200; as compared. with the .preceding year, although the revenue. ha also . been . affected, . chiefly ..through the general strike. The_ net revenue account shows a deficit on the trolley-bus. .accounts of 13,191, however, and this has been met by the paymeat of 11,642. from the borough rate and £1,540 from the trolley .vehiclereserve fund. On the trolley-buses 3,595,555 passengers were carried.
