RMC Haulage has four vehicles on deep sea container work. Owner Rob Colliver pays a set day rate.
“The positive thing is that drivers aren’t going to sit around in laybys killing time, they may as well get on and finish earlier. On the negative side, the hourly rate can look pretty poor if they do a 15-hour day, but that’s rare, and they get a lot of clear time to do as they wish on boxes.There’s a company-imposed speed limit of 52mph, although I haven’t had to reduce the limiters as the drivers are aware that if they start tearing about they’ll find the trucks being turned down, losing the extra they have to overtake.
“I looked at various ways of paying and decided this was the fairest, and the least likely to encourage bad practices, plus it’s the easiest way to run the payroll.”
