SURREY POLICE force is urging hauliers to remain vigilant following a spate of fuel thefts from HGVs inside business compounds.
The most recently recorded incident took place over the weekend of 24 September, when large quantities of diesel were stolen from two artics parked in West Molesey. Police are linking this with another theft close by between 5pm on Thursday 22 September and 5.45am the following morning, when the offenders removed a padlock to a haulage yard and stole 200 litres of fuel from three HGVs.
Oficers also believe a third incident at a building site in Walton-on-Thames might be linked to the other offences.
“Oficers are in the process of reviewing local CCTV footage, and Elmbridge neighbourhood oficers will be increasing patrols in the areas where the offences took place,” says Elmbridge neighbourhood inspector David Hollingsworth.
A police spokesman advises irms to have appropriate lighting, CCTV and reinforced locks to protect their premises, and adds: “This is more likely to be opportunistic rather than a criminal gang. We have had them previously from laybys, so it’s unusual that these are from an industrial estate and a building site and in fairly quick succession.”
