Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE report for 1960 of the Medical Officer of Health to the Lancashire County Council points out that, although last year was not marked by any outstanding developments in the county's ambulance service, attention was directed to a number of matters involving longterm planning which will bear fruit in future years.

Among these items was the radio scheme, the installation stage of which ended in 1959. The use of radio communication is now commonplace throughout the service.

Operational experience of radio control has confirmed that further streamlining of the service is a practical possibility. In addition to further centralization of telephone reception arrangements it is considered that several existing stations might well be closed if one or two new stations serve wider areas. Appropriate proposals will be made in future building programmes.

As the majority of ambulances now in service were bought within a few years of each other, the report explains, they will fall due for disposal about the same time and about 116 of them will require replacement during the next two or three years.

During 1960 specifications were prepared in conjunction with the Chief Fire. Officer and orders were placed for 30 vehicles. Three makes of chassis were chosen in equal 'numbers:—the Karricr special ambulance chassis, the Bedford J.1, chassis and the Morris Commercial FG series IV (Austin 200) chassis. Some of the Morris chassis are to have diesel engines. All will be equipped with automatic chassis lubrication systems.

One chassis of each make will have Dunlop "Pneuride " air suspension fitted to the rear axle and one of each make will be fitted with " Laminaire " suspension. The remaining chassis will have suspensions designed by the respective manufacturers for ambulance purposes,
