Next Tuesday's Dunfermline sitting of the Northern Scotland Commissioners will be occupied by non-controversial applications of IV. Alexander and Sons, Ltd., and others. Gazette No. 23 contains 12 pages devoted to licences granted.

Express Yorkshire-London services, as well as some cross-country services in the north, will cause strong controversy at the Leeds sitting next week of the Yorkshire Commissioners.

Mainly stage-carriage applications will be heard at the Preston sitting of the North-Western Commissioners commencing October 12th, the names of Ribble Motor 'Services, Ltd., and Preston Corporation figuring prominently. The corporation is being represented in connection with many of the Ribble concern's routes. Only short-period licence grants are announced in Gazette No. 23. The Crosville company has withdrawn its express-carriage applications for the Birk-Eirmingham and Warrington-Llandudno routes.

Some controversial applications in respect of excursions and tours are due for hearing at the West Midland sitting which opens to-morrow, October 7th. The railways are objecting to several of them.

Gazette No. 27 lists a large number of licence grants and announces the decision of the Minister of Transport against the appeal lodged by Mr. S. IL Joiner. The decision includes a clause under Section 114 (2) of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, requiring the appellant to pay the costs incurred hi connection with the inquiry. Under this section the Minister is able to settle payment of the costs as he may think just.

No particularly controversial applications are listed for next week's Bedford sitting of the East Midland Commissioners, although there is a fair amount of railway opposition to excursions, etc. Gazette No. 29 announces that the appeal of Greyhound Motors, Ltd., has been dismissed, and that the company will have to pay the Minister's costs in connection with the inquiry.

The Silver Queen Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., of Clacton, will probably face practically no objection to its applications coming up for hearing by the Eastern Commissioners at Ipswich next week. Certain smaller operators, however, are met by strong opposition from the railways and railway-associated bus companies, especially in connection with excursions and tours.

Many of the previously adjourned applications in the South Wales Area are now listed for hearing on Tuesday next, October 13th, at Newport. Some are opposed by Red and White Services, Ltd. In the main, the applications for hearing up to October 16th are not subject to much opposition, but at the sitting commencing at Cardiff on October 20th many local authorities and operators will be making representations. Gazette No. 23 announces the cancellation of :three licences, one for a stagecarriage workmen's service and the other two for excursions and tours.

A number of small operators is being

dealt with by the Western Commissioners at next Wednesday's sitting at

Torquay. A more important case is that of Messrs. Allchin and Sons, Northampton, whose Torquay-London service is being objected to by Elliott Brothers (Bournemouth), Ltd., the G.W.R. and several other companies. A similar position arises in connection with the routes connecting Plymouth with Nottingham and Wolverhampton. Main Lines, Ltd., London, is facing strong railway opposition to its LondonWest Country express services.

Gazette No. 22 lists a number of lieence refusals, mainly to independent operators. McShane's Motors, Ltd., Liverpool, is refused a backing for its Liverpool-Bournemouth line, and Aniway Motor Services, Manchester, is refused backings for its three services between Manchester and Ilfracombe, Tor

quay and Bristol. Five appeal dismissals are announced, these affecting Burnell's Motors, Ltd., Messrs. F. Sully and Sons, Messrs. Grattan Brothers, Messrs:Reyne and Merritt and Mr. S. II. Joiner.

At the Winchester sitting of the Southern Commissioners, commencing October 13th, •the Southern and Great Western Railways are objecting to numbers of applications for excursions by comparatively small operators. According to Gazette No. 28, Mr. V. A. Worraker has been refused a backing for excursions from Hanimersmith.

Gazette No. 29 of the South-Eastern Area includes details of a lot of opposition to London-coastal services and ex

cursions. Green Line Coaches, Ltd., and big railway-associated companies appear as objectors. Mainly express services will be dealt with next week, the railways objecting to most of them, including one or two by Pickfords Ltd. G.B. (Motor Tours), Ltd., London, the head of which is Mr. M. Logette, who has done so much for the M.H.C.S.A. and for operators generally, is opposed by the Southern Railway, East Surrey Traction Co., Ltd. and others, in connection with its old-established South Coast express services. Mr. Logette has an excellent name and the licences are not likely to be refused.

Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., and the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., are refused several applications for stagecarriage licences for seryices between Margate and South Coast towns.

Gazette No, 29 of the Metropolitan Area lists a number of fresh applica tions. Mr. A. Clark (Eastern Belle Motor Coaches) has a good deal of opposition to face on October 12th in connection with his Bow-Margate expressservice application and an application for excursions and tours. Short-distance express services' between London termini and Various sports grounds, etc., will occupy most of next week's sitting, and practically every one is opposed by the L.G.O. Co., Ltd.

The gazette contains many decisions, including 22 refusals, several concerning short-period services. Queen Line Coaches and Baldock Motor Transport, Ltd:, has been refused a licence for a London-Barmouth express service.
