Two Novelties Consist of a 21-ton Industrial Truck and an Elevating Truck
1.–.1REE2TBAT battery-electric Indus trial trucks are well known in factory yards, docks, etc., but two recent additions to the range of industrial vehicles made by Greenwood and Batley, Ltd., Albion Works, Leeds, are of the petrol-engined type.
Known as model P/T2 is a 2i-ton truck, 10 ft. 6 ins. long, 3 ft. 10 ins. wide, and 4 ft. 4 ins. in overall height, offering a platform space of 8 ft. by 3 ft. 10 ins, at a height of 1 ft. 9 ins. It will attain 6 m.p.h. with full load.
Conventional practice is followed in that the front wheels control the steering, and the drive is taken to the rear wheels. The turning circle has a 20-ft. diameter, and control is by the usual steering wheel. The driver is seated immediately over the bulkhead at the front of the platform, and has to his left the hand-brake lever, also the control for the gearbox, which. affOrds one forward speed and one reverse ; a box giving two speeds in each direction can be supplied if required.
The rolled-steel chassis is built up by welding and riveting, and the suspension is by helical springs.
A Morris 10-20 h.p. four-cylindered, water-cooled engine is employed, and it drives through a standard plate clutch of the same make. All the wheels. carry 18-in. by 3i-in. solid-ruhbar tyres, and the brakes take effect on the rear wheels ; the pedal operates contracting shoe-type brakes on the worm shaft, whilst the hand• lever contracts a band on a drum on the propeller shaft.
The second machine consists of a 214-ton elevating truck which has a similar speed, but its dimensions are as follow :—Overall length, 10 ft. 01 in.; width, 3 ft. 2f ins. ; height, 4 ft. 41. ins.; platform, 4 ft. 10i ins.
by 2, ft. 2 ins. The lift provided is 4 ins., i.e., from 11 ins. to 15 ins. In this case the steering wheel turns the two front wheels, which also serve to drive the vehicle. The rear wheels are carried on a forged-steel trailing axle, and have 10-in. by 5-in. tyres. The driving wheels are of 20 ins, diameter.
The gearbox is bolted to the engine casing and provides one forward speed
and one reverse. In this case the controls are mounted to give lateral operation, as the driver sits sideways. A separate lever regulates the elevating motion, power for which is derived directly from the gearbox through a spur and worm reduction coupled to a crank arm connected to the load platform. Elevation takes a matter of only 4 sees.
A hand-operated brake consists of a contracting shoe-type set operating on the vertical driving shaft. A secondary brake on the driving wheels may be provided at an extra cost.
