Some Information Relating to the Different Types of Brockhouse Product, Particularly Four-wheelers

TTAVING built up a satisfactory busi

ness in connection with two wheeled ; trailers of various sizes, Brockhouse and Co., Ltd., Victoria Works, Hill Top, West Bromwich, has recently introduced several four-wheeled trailers, ranging in capacity from two tons to eight tons. The 4-5-ton, 8-ton and 8-ton models are all similar in design, the differences being chiefly a matter of dimensions.

The frames are constructed throughout of steel, in the' form of rolled sections or of castings; in certain places pressings are used, such as for the wheel discs. The channel-steel frame is the full width of the platform and, there-, fore, the height is reduced, as there is no need for additional cross-bolsters. At the front the frame is stiffened by extra channel members and an ingenious method of reinforced construction is used for supporting the turntable.

To relieve the centre pin of the shearing stresses, a conical member on the upper part of the turntable fits into a similar cavity in the lower part, steel castings being used for these two members. Provision is made for the lubrication of this beating, Tecalemit greasegun nipples being installed. The substantial leaf springs of unusual width are supported on axles of straightforward design, and are pivoted to the frame at their front ends, the shackles being at the rear.

Each rear wheel carries a large internal-expanding brake which is operable either by means of a lever on the chassis or by a cable leading to the driver's cab on the towing vehicle. The hubs are carried on tapered roller bearings.

The Brockhouse 8-ton trailer is shod with 36-in. by 8-in. tyres on pressedsteel wheels. The road springs are 3 ins, wide, whilst the brake-drum diameter is 16 ins. On the 6-tonner the spring width is 21 ins. and 14-in. brakes are fitted. The tyres are the same as those on the heavier model. The 4-5-tonner is equipped with 34-in. by 7-in. tyros.

Turning to the smallest of the 13rockhouse four-wheeled trailers, the 2-tonner has a somewhat different type of frame, the main longitudinal channel members being placed closer together. At each end, cross-members are extended to the full platform width, wood side members being carried by them so as to complete the width of the frame. This model has springs 21 wide, 12-in, brakes and 32-in. by 41-in. high-pressure tyres.

In addition to these standardized models, the company has had extensive experience in the manufacture of special-purpose chassis, of which a good example is furnished by a rather unusual low-loading articulated trailer to work in conjunction with a Bedford chassis. 'It has a capacity of four-five tons and only 15 ins. above road level there is a platform 15 ft. long, a further 7 ft. of platform being available at the higher level of floor above the turntable.
