AS MANY ARE aware. some two years ago most of Europe changed its currency to the euro. Seizing an opportunity to boost their funds, many UK charities set up collections of the now redundant European currencies to convert to sterling for use with their charity fundraising efforts.

Myself and other shops within the CDC chain joined in with several charities' efforts and, via some simple advertising and word of mout h, got several thousand lorry drivers to drop in odd packets of coins and banknotes for the fundraising efforts of two of the major collecting drives which we were supporting.

Most of these official collections seemed to cease about September 2002. However, little packets of currency kept appearing at my shop, and others in our group, so the decision was made to carry on collecting and donate it to Keech Cottage Hospice in Luton. This is part of the Pasque charity which runs a hospice giving care and respite to seriously and sometimes terminally ill children and their families from Hertfordshire. Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. With the help of countless drivers this year we have managed to donate close to £700 to the hospice, which pales into insignificance when you realise is costs £3m a year to run and only 20% comes from the government.

There is still change lying around in people's homes, but the 2004 cut-off date for conversion is rapidly approaching and we urge your readers to have one last dig down the back of their sofas, or indeed in the dark corners of their cabs.

Obviously there are parts of the country where we have not got a shop. The only thing I can think of is for any transport company who may read this appeal, to ask their drivers passing any of our CDC locations if they would be kind enough to deliver small packets to us.
