'WRITE regarding your story "Licence hacked after third-party defence" (CM, 2 October).

The third party involved was WG Davies of Sageston,Tenby, a main ERF dealer with three sites inWales.InApril 2003,WG Davies approached my firm,RS Consultants, to provide an overview of its inspection procedures, workshops and paperwork systems.

The work we undertook enabled it to notify its customers when the driver daily check walk round is not being completed. To this end. it has caused WG Davies some problems where three customers , have moved elsewhere.

Our work with the company is ongoing, as it has now asked us to do spot checks without prior notification. RS Consultants can clearly state that WG Davies is the only third-party supplier we are aware of to take steps to ensure that its inspection and paperwork procedures comply withVOSA requirements and the signed declaration made by the operator when he obtains the 0-licence.

In this respect,WG Davies is a flagship for the third-party providers to the industry and certainly for ERF. It is proactive in assisting the operator to maintain his 0-licence and his good repute.

From your editorial it seems drivers' daily walk-round checks were non-existent within the operation. While the Traffic Commissioner may well listen to the operator's mitigation,we are all aware that the operator cannot delegate any of the points which resulted in the curtailment of its licence. The mitigation obviously did not convince the TC, hence the 50% curtailment of the licence.
