Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Bereaved father's screen solution

THE FATHER of a 21-year-old cyclist who was killed in a collision with a truck has produced a film about the dangers trucks pose in urban areas.

Called 44-tonne articulated entelcs card towns don't mix ,the film has already been shown on digital television and several screens around the country.

Robin Webb won £5,000 of lottery funding to produce the film, which argues that the government has given little thought to the implications of large trucks in towns even though their permitted weights have doubled in the past 40 years.

"The problem seems to be that with the cabs so high up on top of the engine, there's no way drivers can see things close to them," Webb says. His daughter Elizabeth was killed in 1999 when hit by a 38tonne lorry which was turning left at traffic lights on Mile End Road, central London. One solution suggested by Webb is to fit sensors on big trucks so they automatically stop if somebody is in their way. Another is to create 'decanting centres' on the edge of towns where goods from big trucks can be transferred to smaller ones for onward delivery.

-There are a hell of a lot of possible solutions —let's have a look at them so we can have a better way of doing things," says Webb, a civil engineer from Essex.

He claims several hauliers are sympathetic to his decanting idea, although none was prepared to feature in the film.

Last year, London Cycling Campaign launched a publicity campaign about the danger that left-turning trucks pose to cyclists. Tom Bogdanowicz, LCC campaigns manager, says 44% of deaths among cyclists in London from 1994-98 were caused by trucks. But he adds: -The number of cycling casualties in London overall has reduced since then. despite cycling having increased."
