A STRIKE IS looming at TNT Logistics after management failed to defuse a row over bonuses for drivers working on a contract with Rugby Cement.

More than 80 drivers at a depot in South Ferriby near Hull are furious that their bonus of £20 a week is nearly four times lower than elsewhere in the country (CM 9 October).

Transport & General Workers Union regional industrial organiserJohn Hibbett is now arranging a strike ballot, saying the company's grievance procedure has been exhausted. "The drivers feel angry. bitter and let down by their employer.They feel they have just been thrown a crumb." He says all but one of the drivers has rejected an offer to boost the bonus to £35 a week from January, adding that other depots have been receiving weekly bonuses of either £40 or £75 since June.

"We asked the employer to offer £40, backdated to June. We think that would be a fair compromise." Hibbett adds.

However. TNT says its terms and conditions for drivers reflect local employment conditions, but declines to discuss how individual bonus schemes operate.

Hibbett says the company has experienced difficulties recruiting and retaining drivers at Rugby — where drivers receive the £75 bonus, along with two other depots in the south east.
