AS soon as resources permit. more money should be spent on improving main roads vital to industrial production and exports, said Sir Harry Pilkington, president of the Federation of British Industries, at Newcastle last week.

The Federation were convinced that present inadequate roads in industrial areas wasted industrial time, and that selective capital expenditure on highways would give, nationally, a quick return. He declared: "We believe a reduction in taxation achieved by putting off yet further some productive expenditure would be false economy."
