"
IF the people of Great Britain continue to kill and injure themselves and each other as they have done in recent years. the yearly death toll will exceed 10,000 within the next decade, and the annual total of road casualties will be in excess of half a million."
This was stated by Mr. Ernest Marples. Minister of Transport, when he launched a five-month road-safety campaign-" Stop Accidents—Honour Your Code" —on Monday.
It will run throughout the summer and is organized jointly by the Ministry of Transport and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. In Scotland, the Society and the Secretary of State will run the campaign.
Mr. Marples has written to local authorities throughout the country for support for the campaign, pointing out that most accidents are caused by avoidable human errors. By honouring the Code, a large number of accidents could be avoided: Attention will he concentrated on one class of road user each month, This month, drivers are the target; in June, motorcyclists. July will be for cyclists. August for children, and September pedestrians, when the campaign end's.
Each month the national effort will be highlighted by a special event taking place in a different part of the country. " Drivers' Month " will _ have, as its special event, the visit of Lord Cheshann, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry, to Wolverhampton on May 13.
He will open a new training ground for motorists and attend a motor rally in St. Christopher's Park.
