m The Road Haulage Association's chief executive has written to the Treasury demanding to know the government's policy on fuel-duty payment after CM revealed tightening credit terms were damaging haulier's businesses.
The crux of the problem was first highlighted after a CM investigation showed oil firms were only reacting to the demands placed on them by Customs & Excise to pay duty (0M20-26 Feb ).
And after reading the article, the RHA's Roger King has
written to Treasury economic secretary John Healey urging him to look into the matter, and calling for "a more generous policy in order to ease a very serious issue".
King says the RHA is concerned about reduced credit terms and has raised the issue in the past when responding to complaints from hauliers that credit limits were being slashed by fuel giants. He hopes this line of inquiry will result in some easing of the situation.
"The government might try to get money quickly, but it will unwittingly release a problem further down the chain." he says. 1 reduction in credit terms is making a difficult situation disastrous."
