• Supermarket giant Safeway is beating congestion charging by using alternative-fuel vehicles to deliver to its stores within the charging zone.
Safeway says that as well as being exempt from charges, the trucks, which run on compressed natural gas (CNG) are 50% quieter than diesel. It hopes that this may encourage the government to lift London Lorry Ban (LLB) night-time delivery curfews in residential areas, which would enable it to keep trucks off the road during peak hours and ease congestion for Other road users (for more on the London Lorry Ban, see page 36).
Lawrence Christensen, Safeway's supply director says: "Best environmental practice is critical to Safeway and we hope the success of this initiative will encourage the use of CNG by other companies and fleet operators.
"The government's decision to maintain the reduced duty on road-fuel gas and to introduce excise duty for qualifying low-emission vehicles should help to grow the market for clean-fuelled vehicles. The cost saving of using CNG is around 10%01 the cost of running a diesel Operation."
