II The number of vehicles travelling to Europe has risen by 174% over the last 16 years, but the proportion of UK hauliers doing international work has plunged from a high of 52% in 1996 to only 27% in 2002.
The figures, released by the Department for Transport in its Transport Statistics Bulletin, show just how much foreign hauliers have come to dominate International work.
The latest information shows that while 493,300 UK-registered powered vehicles travelled to mainland Europe last year the figure was dwarfed by the 1,290,100 foreign-registered vehicles making the trip.
The percentage figures look dramatic, but the change has mainly come from the growth in foreign traffic, which has exploded from only 302,000 journeys in 1986 to its all-time high of 1.29 million last year. The number of UK-registered vehicles travelling abroad has risen from 201,400 in 1986, but that is still a drop of 69,400 from the high reached in 1999.
