Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Training group

• Reading and Slough Group Training Association held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday at a combined function, with Esso as host. The Esso fleet maintenance programme was illustrated, and visual aids such as Adapta and Sasco wall charts recommended as additional to Esso forms for large and small fleets respectively. RTITB director-general Mr Eric Tindall handed over the group's first training vehicle, a 16-ton Dodge flat. The group chairman is Mr R. Rockell (Tayrock, Marlow), group training officer is Mr E. W. Julian and driving instructor is Mr Michael Fleming.

Dennis—new vehicle

• A policy-forming holding company named Dennis Motor Holdings is to be set up, with Mr John King, Mr I. H. G. Wilson, Mr Julian Amery, Mr A. C. E. Musk and Mr G. S. Stone as directors. The Guildford-based concern will in future trade under the names of the Dennis Group of Companies. Mr Wilson, Dennis Bros managing director, told a meeting of distributors and dealers last week that a new commercial vehicle is to be put on the market, but first they were going to make sure that "it is the right vehicle to sell". Design work is to start soon.

44 tons? Not us

• R HA national chairman Mr Noel Wynn told North Western (Western) area members at their annual dinner in Southport on Saturday that it was "somewhat mysterious" that hauliers should be the principal target of the campaign against proposals to increase vehicle weights. It was not hauliers who were creating the demand for a 44-ton vehicle, he said, though clearly there was scope for a rational discussion of the subject of bigger vehicles, and there were clearly instances in which a larger vehicle could reduce congestion by replacing two smaller ones. "We could", he said, "well do without these raucous pressure groups who seem to take a delight in furiously attacking the haulier and in so doing discredit the promotion of conservation and amenity in which we are just as much involved as they are."

Defect forms • A book of 50 report sheets in triplicate has been devised as a drivers' defect report system (price 7s 6d a book) by the Western maintenance advisory committee, Roadway House, 20 Church Road, Redfield, Bristol, and Roadway House, Transit Way, Honicknowle, Plymouth. The committee has re-elected Mr H. A. Russett (Premier Transport) as chairman and elected Mr L. G. Read (UBM Transport) as vice-chairman. The chairman's annual report was presented at Monday's a...m. in Torgua .
