T RANSPORT today requires qualified 1 men with ideas more than ever before, thinks Maj.-Gen. G. N. Russell, president of the Institute of Transport and chairman Of British Road Services' board of management. He told the Inslitute's Tees-side and district section last week that more young members of staffs should be brought into contact With the Institute.
There should be no fear of changes, he said, because changes must be prepared for and accepted. In some sections of transport there was still too much "catch as catch can" and too many freelances. Discussing wages, he said there should be good pay and fair shares in the industry, for men should always be well rewarded for their efforts.'
Col. J. G. Peckston, president of Tees-side and South West Durham Chamber of Commerce. said there should be closer liaison between modes of transport, although he hoped there would always be healthy rivalry between road and rail.
