The Marsden demountable is in many ways similar to an artic and semi-trailer in the way the body is coupled and uncoupled. The chassis is fitted with a fifth-wheel coupling just behind the cab and the body is fitted with two 12in. diameter rubber-tyred wheels at the rear. These wheels allow the body to be shunted over short distances in a yard. When mounted on the chassis the body is in its fully. raised position and the engine-powered hydraulic lifting gear lowers the body for demounting. To drop the body the driver first lowers the body wheels, lets down the front legs, releases the fifth-wheel jaws and lowers the body until legs and wheels touch the ground; the vehicle can then drive out. The system does tend to be heavy and a version tested by CM (November 24 1972) on a British Leyland Boxer 14.25-ton-gvw chassis only had an effective payload capacity of 7 tons 13cwt,
