A NEW scheme has been introduced by the Department of Transport, in association with the Department of Trade and the Health and Safety Executive, to mark to United Nations standards containers used to carry dangerous goods.

The range of receptacles covered by the scheme is limited to those with a net weight of 400kg (881.81b) or below, such as steel or aluminium drums, plastic jerricans, fibreboard cases and sacks made of fabric, plasti paper.

The scheme will ensure 1 packages of a suitable si dard are tested, the Gov( ment thus providing an a: rance of compliance with standards to other goy( ments and to carriers w such packaging is used for carriage of dangerous go on international journeys.

It is important to note 1 duties under Sections 2 ar of the Health and Safet Work Act are not affectec this scheme, but the HSI considering the developrr mckaging standards for the iveyance of dangerous Lds, together with criteria which testing establishnts may be approved.

Jntil the statutory requirents for testing stations have prepared, tests will be iducted under the new ieme by the Research ;ociation of the Paper and trd, Printing and Packing ustries, Leatherhead, and I follow the recommendais of the United Nations nmittee of Experts on the Lnsport of Dangerous 3ds.
