As a tachograph agent, fully trained and equipped to EEC standards in April, 1971, and only recently approved by the Department of Transport, I feel I must respond to the letter from "a fed up operator" (CM, December 9).

Over the years, we have gathered experience and expertise which convinces us that the tachograph is a very reliable and robust product when it is properly installed, calibrated and used.

There are, we agree, one or two known faults, some not of the tachograph manufacturers' or our making, which, where they exist, can easily be rectified at our tachograph centre.

With the stop-go policies that have operated during the whole of the 1970s, together with the lack of positive leadership from the Government, trade unions and trade associations alike, it is small wonder that your correspondent is so

incensed, even though he appears to have the wrong target.

"Fed up operator," do not despair; bring your vehicle along for a check-up and calibration. We will guarantee your satisfaction.

To the industry we would add that we, too, could easily be fed up.

Instead, we would like to encourage the representatives of the industry to stop knocking and start adopting a more constructive attitude to tachograph. We are sure that this is what their members now want.

About 565,000

commercial vehicles within the UK will require tachographs to be fitted after January 1, 1978, and we are fully equipped and qualified to undertake our share of this work.
