The Train Fourcylindered 500 c.c. Engine, which is of Particularly Clean

Design

ACOMPACT small power unit has lately been produced by the oldestablished proprietary engine firm of Train, This engine is intended particularly for light parcels-delivery vehicles, as well as for the small motorcultivating machines and dwarf tractors so largely used in French vineyards.

The engine is a four-cylindered 500 c.c. unit with push-rod-operated overhead valves. The cylinder capacity is actually a little under 500 c.c., as the bore and stroke are 50 mm. and 63 mm. respectively. A special feature of the unit is the neat way in which the threespeed-and-reverse gearbox and clutch casing have been built up into the crankcase, the whole arrangement occupying far less space than usual.

A large outside flywheel is fitted at the forward end of the crankshaft and positive air-cooling is employed for the cylinders. A belt-driven turbine fan drives air through a light steel jacketing over the cylinder block.

Ignition is by dynamo and battery, with Delco-type distributor ; an electric starter is fitted to special order. The engine is delivered normally with a kickstarter of the motorcycle type, operating through the gearbox. The entire unit weighs only 60 kilos., and the engine runs at a normal speed of 3,000 r.p.m. to 4,500 r.p.m.

Propeller-shaft drive ran be taken either off the upper or lower gearbox shaft, according to whether a bevel or underslung-worm-driven rear axle be employed. Up-to-date dry-sump lubrication is used and the clutch is of the multiple disc type, running in oil.

Workmanship and finish are excellent and appear to be in advance of the conditions found in the average French motorcycle engine.

The gear ratios provided are 4.7 to 1,• 3.2 to 1, and 2.15 to 1. The overall length of the unit is 430 mm., width 320 ram., and height 465 ram. It is retailed in France at 4,100 frs. complete, and is made by Les Etablissements E. Train, 6 and 9, Rue Tionget cle l'Isle, Courbevoie (Seine), France.
