Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• From next year all Ministry of Defence vehicle suppliers will have to to hold the quality standard BS5750.

It will replace the Aqap standard which the ministry itself currently awards. From September, manufacturers will have to pass the 'civilian' alternative BS5750, or its European equivalent ISO 9001.

MoD suppliers include Leyland Daf, Volvo, Foden, Seddon Atkinson and Reynolds Boughton. So far, only two UK manufacturers, Foden and ERF have BS5750. Leyland Daf and Volvo say they aim to have it, or the European equivalent by next year.

The MoD decision means that manufacturers will have to pay an accreditation body, such as the British Standards institution or Lloyds, to judge their operation. The cost of assessing a big truck manufacturer could be as high as £50,000.
