Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Wychbold

WHEN the West Midland Traffic Cornnaissioners refused to allow higher,

fares on works services operated by J. Crowther, Wychbold, to the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., they had been misled into thinking Crowther's wanted co-ordination • with the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.

This was claimed at Birmingham, last week, when Crowther's appealed against the decision. Mr. J. Else, on their behalf, said although they wanted substantial increases, their fares would still be lower than those of the B.M.M.O.

The appeal raised points far more important than were envisaged at the lime, he said. The chairman of the Commissioners had said it would be useless for other operators to think they could obtain increases without applying. Clearly he was saying that he would not exercise his powers to vary other licences, yet there were 12 independent operators who had not had increases in fares since 1952.

The Commissioners' keynote had been co-ordination, but Crowther's did not ask to fall in line with B.M.M.O., the only logical co-ordination.

Mr. I. B. Griffiths, for B.M.M.O., supported the appeal.
