.„ as trailer targets crime spots
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE Police are taking a trailer liveried with `Truckers Beware' across the region in a bid to divert drivers away from lay-bys prone to I-1G V crime.
The trailer, supplied by freight crime-fighting body TruckPol. is being used in lay-bys along the Al. It was collected, free of charge, from Oxfordshire on 28 July by Eddie Stobart Newark staff.
TruckPol intelligence officer DC Alan Soames says the region is a lorry theft hotspot. As recently as Wednesday 23 July eight pallets of air freshener were stolen from a Hungary-registered truck on the Al while the driver slept.
A police spokesman tells CM there is further evidence of crime in the area: "Although police are not linking the incidents directly, six other curtainsided trucks had holes cut into them at Markham Moor services on the same night, although nothing was taken from any of the trucks there."
Stobart says it is happy to help with the crime reduction project as it has previously fallen victim to lorry vandals.
• TruckPol says the number of offences recorded between January and June was 18.9% lower than the same period in 2008. For the six months to 30 June there were 1,587 recorded crimes compared to 1,889 for the same period in 2008.
