Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Western Licensing Authority. Mr. S. W. Nelson, at Salisbury, last Friday, commended the spirit of

" sweet reasonableness" which appeared to be breaking out in the area. He hoped that it would shortly be possible for all the operators to meet and sort out their licences in such a way that each would he entitled, without qualification, to pick up within four miles of his starting point and that all fares would be co-ordinated.

So far as possible, he said, all restrictions should be abandoned, and there should be simple licences with clearcut areas of operation and starting points.

He also hoped that operators would make sensible arrangements among themselves to help each other out, and that when two or snore operators had only a few passengers each, one. coach instead of three or four nearly empty ones would be used.

The Authority was hearing an application by Messrs. Fry and' Son, Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Bath, to run excursions and tours. Mr. W. L. Field. Mendip Queen Coaches, Ltd., Mr. N. King, Mr. F. Pow and British Railways objected.

Mr. W. T. Corpe, for the applicants, said that a measure of agreement had been reached with the objectors. His .clients had asked1or picking-up points at Radstock and Midsonner Norton, and the representative of Mendip Queen Coaches had said they would not object to picking-up points within a four-mile radius of the starting point, and that similar treatment should be accorded to all operators.

He had said they were prepared to waive their objection provided that an assurance was given that when they had a similar application it would not be opposed. The proper course seemed to be a conference between all operators.

The Authority granted a licence for -\ London, and said that a dispensation would be granted to all other operators in that district to pick up within a fourmite radius of their starting points. Application must, however, be made immediately.

Mendip Queen Coaches undertook to call the proposed conference soon.
