From October maximum axle weights will be restricted to 12.5 tonnes with a maximum of 6.25 tonnes at any wheel station. These limits may be reduced subject to the tyre equipment fitted and axle spread dimension.

The converse is not allowed: for example larger tyre equipment does not allow plated weights to be exceeded.

From October, vehicle plates should include information on tyre size, speed and axle weight limits. The new rules are set out in statutory instrument 1987 No 1327 available from HM Stationary Office.
