Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A doctor who gave a diabetic truck driver the all-clear to drive despite his history of blackouts has been found guilty of misconduct after his patient killed three people in an accident.

Dr Ramanathapur Krishnamurthy filled out a medical report for the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency for John Davies' HGV licence application stating that he was fit to drive, However, Davies' medical records showed that he suffered from insulin-dependent diabetes and had suffered from hypo-attacks while driving.

Months later Davies, from Mid-Glamorgan, was jailed for causing death by dangerous driving after he lost consciousness at the wheel and his truck careered across the road into an oncoming car.

The GMC says it "accepts that this was an isolated error in Dr Krishanmurthy's othens unblemished career, theref it was sufficient to conclude case with a reprimand".

Stephen Fishwick, natic campaign manager Diabetes UK, stresses that all sufferers will have hypo; caemic attacks; some can c trol their diabetes with tabl and exercise.

"There is no more evider to suggest that people with betas driving are more of a r than others," he reports. " recommend that people hi an annual assessment wit diabetes specialist.

"Each driver's case sho be looked at individually how they are aware of si attacks and control their ease. Anecdotal evidence I also shown that having a blan ban on all drivers would leac people concealing that ti have the condition."
