GLASGOW'S streets will be come congested again i authority is not given for corn pletion of the city's inner rim motorway around the east am south of the city.

So said the Freight Transpor Association when it endorse( Strathclyde Regional Council': plans to go ahead with the corn pletion of the ring road, and i has urged Scottish Secretar George Younger to approve thl plan.

The FTA claimed that th( existing north and west flanks o the motorway have saved 2: lives since they were built in th( 1960s and early 1980s, and sai( that surveys proved that vehich speeds had been increased journey times reduced, fue saved, and bus services speedec up as a result of the motorway.

It warned, however, that th( road will eventually become sa turated with traffic, and driven will feel compelled to return tc city streets, with resultant cong estion. "Such congestion no only affects the commutinc motorist, but commercial and in dustrial traffic vital to the loca economy," advised the FTA.

It is satisfied that environmen tal measures will preserve th( historic part of Glasgow arounc the cathedral, and that sensibl( routing will minimise traffic nui sance in the Gorbals and Lau rieston districts.
