Another haulier has gone into administration in the face of rising costs,

resulting in 50 redundancies. Bridget Carter reports.

A DERBYSHIRE OPERATOR has been forced to close this month, leaving 50 people without jobs.

Via Gellia Transport (VGT) was placed into administration on Monday 25 September; workers were sent home the same day.

Director John Faircy cites rising costs and difficulty recouping costs: "It has just been the general problems endemic in the haulage industry. really rising costs and interest payments and so on.

"It is disappointing and very sad because people have worked extremely hard."

The firm lost £518,846 for the year ending 31 December 2004: at one stage it owed more than £2m, mostly to the bank.

VGT was set up in 1989 and has an 80-strong fleet delivering aggregates and minerals throughout the UK and the Continent. Ii also ran a workshop and a driving school from its Middleton depot.

The administrator is FA Simms and Partners.
