it Texaco claims that 'significant' maintenance savings await operators who choose its new Long Life Coolant (for details write No 75 on reader reply card).

The patented development is said to provide complete cooling system protection for all automotive engines, for 400,000 miles of on-road use or five years/8,000 hours off road. There is no need to use a single supplemental coolant additive (SCA).

Conventional coolants need to be topped up with SCAs at either 12,000 or 20,000 miles and at regular intervals thereafter to maintain engine protection, says to Texaco.

John Newton, technical manager with Texaco's lubricants division, says: "Figures vary according to operating conditions but initial fieldwork shows that a bus operator could save £260 a vehicle over a five-year period, while offroad savings could amount to about £1,400 over 8,000 hours, simply by not using SCAs. "In addition," he says, "Texaco customers have reported a 50% decrease in water pump losses when using Long Life Coolant."

Texaco says the product contains no silicates, nitrates, borates, phosphates, amines or other abrasive dissolved solids that can contribute to water pump seal wear. The absence of silicates means there is no silicate drop-out to clog radiators.

The removal of phospates also reduces hard water scaling which solves the problem of reduced heat conduction in the cooling system. There is said to be good protection against pitting for wet-sleeve cast-iron cylinder liners.

The Coolant has been recommended by Cummins, Leyland Daf, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Iveco Ford, Volvo and Scania.
