• The eight originators of the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport met in Liverpool last week during the Association of Public Passenger Transport Operators' conference (report, p.47). They discussed issues raised after a meeting of interested parties in Birmingham in June. A further statement is expected within the next ten days.
The continuing delay to the formation of the Confederation is having an unsettling effect on many of its potential members, writes Martin Hayes. During the APPTO conference I heard many comments about the future of the proposed body which is intended to speak with one voice for the industry. Though some of the signatories passed off the delay as being caused by the holiday period, there is little doubt that the question of elected representatives is the central obstruction facing the Confederation.
Until this question is resolved uncertainty hangs over the future of the body. The attitude of APPTO, for example, hangs on this point. At its annual general meeting, held behind closed doors in Liverpool, I understand that elected representatives objected to the selection of another professional as the Association's chairman. They are clearly anxious to retain their voice.
