• An East End tipper operator was so frightened of possible acticrn when a Metropolitan Area vehicle examiner called on him that he gave a false name and said the vehicle operator sought had left two hours previously. This was stated at a Section 69 public inquiry in London last week when the operator, Mr L. Constantine Lunan, appeared.

Mr W. a Earnshaw, a Metropolitan Area vehicle examiner, said a person calling himself Mr Smith answered the door and stated that Mr L. C. Lunan was not available. However, Mr Smith arranged an appointment for a few days hence, on June 4 1973.

The appointment was kept by "Mr Smith" who confessed he was really Mr Lunan, said Mr Earnshaw. "Lunan told me he was scared to admit his identity at my first visit because of faults on the vehicle," declared Mr Earnshaw.

Giving his decision, the LA said there had been an impassioned appeal on behalf of Mr Lunan. "Lunen does depend on the vehicle and one has sympathy in circumstances of this kind. I'm not worried about the change of identity — it was a quick reaction by someone with things on his mind. The LA curtailed the two vehicle licence by one.
