Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PATENT No. 895,673 refers to exhaust brakes and in particular the method of sealing the butterfly valve spindle. (Zahnradfabrik A.G., Friedrichshafenon-the-Bodensee, Germany.)

The drawing shows an exhaust throttle in which the butterfly disc (1) rotates on trunnion pins. The lower trunnion (2) is completely sealed and presents no problem, but the upper one must have its spindle projecting. This one is provided with a sealing washer (3). This is held between a seating on the spindle and one on the bush (4). The seating surfaces are all part-spherical to ensure a close fit even when the spindle becomes slack. A pair of washers, arranged coaxially, may be used.
