Southgate U.D.C. has accepted the tender of Lloyd and Plaister. Ltd., at £875, for the supply and delivery of a motor chassis for a chemical fire-engine, etc.

L.C.C. Dennis Engines.

We illustrate herewith one of the L. C. O. Dennis engines. This vehicle is an exact duplicate of the seven Dennis engines which have already been supplied to the Metropolitan brigade, with the exception that front-wheel brakes have been discarded by reason of certain practical difficulties which are stated to have arisen. The engine which we now illustrate is the first of a repeat order for four more Dennis machines.

Swindon Next.

At a supper, in connection with the annual competitions of the Swindon (Wilts.) Borough Fire Brigade, Mr. C. T. Cuss, Chief Officer of the Great Western Railway Fire Brigade in that town, in replying to a toast referred to the great service rendered at a serious fire at the company's works, some time back, by the Swindon Brigade, under the able command of their Chief Officer, Captain J. N. Jeffries, and said that in his opinion it was a much saner policy to maintain a thoroughly-equipped and efficient brigade, to prevent damage, than to insure heavily. He thought, too, that it was very significant that, big centres were going in extensively for motor fireengines, which were more speedy and efficient.

At Kingston-on-Thames.

The Chairman of the Sub-committee which has charge of the Dennis motor fire-engines at Kingston-on-Thames has now issued the Sub-committee's report concerning the first year of service from these engines. Favourable comment is made upon their efficiency and reliable running. One important paragraph reads : "The cost of petrol for running and pumping for the two engines during the year has been less than the amount hitherto paid for fuel and gas heating of the steam engine which they have displaced." Local demonstrations are being given with a Hatfield petrol engine which the Chislehurst U.D.C. has decided to purchase; the terms submitted are 2990, less 2267 for the recently-purchased steamer.

For Eastleigh (Hants.).

The Eastleigh and Bishopstoke U.D.C., the authority which controls the destinies of "New Nine Elms" the rapidly-rising Hampshire railway town, is evidently determined to have an up-to-date and efficient brigade. At the monthly meeting of the Council, last Thursday, it was resolved : "That the Fire Brigade Committee consider the question and type of a new fire-engine, and bring up a report at the next meeting."
