Very much the 'everyman machine from Daimler Trucks, the new 7.5-tonne Mitsubishi Fuso Canter (CM 16 July 20091 features a consolidated Euro-5 engine range that is based an a common 3.0-litre four-pot with EGR an the 129hp and 143hp ratings, and SCR on the top-rated 175hp chassis. Mated to a lighter sixspeed ZF gearbox, the new common-rail diesel (courtesy of Fiat Powertrain) promises fuel economy improvements of between 5% and 8%. The Canter's already competitive payload gets a boost, too, and while it might not be the most glamorous IToY contender, it will doubtless appeal to the thousands of butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers who want a no-nonsense middleweight rigid. Thus, it deserves to be taken seriously.
