Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ONLY three trailer-making concerns will, this year, be exhibiting at the Commercial Motor Exhibition. These are as follow :—R. A. Dyson and Co., Ltd., 76-80, Grafton Street, Liverpool; Eccles Motor Caravans, Ltd., Elazelwell Lane, Pershore Road, Stirchley, Birmingham and J. Brockhouse aid Co., Ltd., Victoria Works, Hill Top, West Bromv ich.

Catering both for the transport of goods and of animals, the first-named Will be showing on Stand 113 a 4-ten trailer, a 110-ton trailer and a trailer horsebox. The first-named follows the usual Dyson practice, although one or two slight modifications have been made, particularly in connection with the brake-application cable. The axles are mounted upon Timken roller bearings, and disc wheels, carrying 32-in. by 6-in, pneumatic tyres, are employed.

The second exhibit will, of course be outstanding in the trailer section. It is approximately 30 ft. long and has 32 wheels, these being shod with rubber tyres. It is of allsteel construction and has been built to the order of a well-known haulage-contracting firm.

The horsebox is framed in oak, five-ply panels being built up on the side members. Strong ash bows support the roof, which is of three-ply wood, the head being covered with canvas. The floor is of deal. A 5-ft. ramp is situated at each end of the body. Towards the forward end of the near side there is a door for the use of an attendant. The interior is, of course, well padded. Ventilation is effected through the medium of louvres, which may be regulated. Steady legs of the screw-down pattern are placed at each corner of the box. The drawbar is of rolled-steel channel and at the front is an automatic brake, which is operated at the same time as are those of the prime mover.

A special device, which enables the towing vehicle and the trailer to be reversed without the brake being brought into action, is supplied. Suspension is by semi-elliptics, whilst pneumatic tyres are carried on the disc wheels. The second exhibitor will be showing on Stand 133 two Eccles trailer horseboxes, a trailer for the conveyance of hunting dogs and one for carrying light loads. The first horsebox is designed to accommodate one animal and is suitable for towing behind a private motorcar of 18-20 b.p. The next Is a two-horse box, but this is too large for trailing behind a private vehicle.

Ventilation has been carefully studied in the case of the third exhibit, which has louvres along the upper edges of the sides, and which is of generous height, thus allowing the animals to obtain an ample supply of fresh air, The fourth exhibit—the light trailer—has ample body space, it being 5 ft. long, 3 ft. 6 ins, wide and 1 ft. 6 ins. deep. In this case wire wheels, carrying pneumatic tyres, are provided. This trailer is suitable for towing behind a private motorcar of the 1i-1itre class and costs £22. Finally, the Brockhouse Co. will display its well-known light Gibson trailers (Stand 90). These have been mentioned from time to time in our columns. First of all there will be the 10-cwt. model ; this has an all-steel chassis and is equipped with internal-expanding brakes, the latter incorporating a special release device, which is brought into action when reversing is being effected. The drawbar embodies a shock-absorbing medium. The wheels are shod with 27-in. by 4.4-in, pneumatic tyres. A similar model, but with a box body, is also to be exhibited, as well as a 10-cwt. chassis equipped with a utility body. In the 6-cwt. class there will be the standard Gibson allsteel trailer chassis, suitable for the conveyance of small motor boats. Finally, a Model having a specification similar to that of the other 6-cwt. machine, but with a utility body, will be shown.
