Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MANY heavy vehicles are a danger at night to overtaking drivers and rear-end lighting of commercial vehicles needs serious attention, These observations were made during the discussion of a paper by Mr. M. W. Kendall. M.I.E.E., deputy chief engineer, Joseph Lucas, Ltd., at a meeting of the Automobile Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, in Birmingham, last week. Mr. Kendall added that the matter would be given careful consideration by his concern.

In answering a question relating to the position of the battery on a vehicle, the author stated that location under the bonnet was good practice so long as there was adequate ventilation. With the battery mounted near the engine, the 'leads were kept short and, of equal importance, the regulator operated at approximately the same temperature as the electrolyte. During tests conducted in Africa it had been found that the battery suffered no harm if its temperature did not rise much above 140 degrees F. In many vehicles with under-bonnet batteries, excessively high temperatures were reached.

In opening the discussion, Mr. .1. R. Rix, technical manager of the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., also referred to the inadequate lighting on some commercial vehicles.
