Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

from a steam-wagon works

A RECENT addition to the range of goods-cartying units made by the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co., lInnslet, Leeds, consists of a pneumatictyred trailer ; the example illustrated on this page was supplied to the electricity department of the Leeds Corporation. It is employed to carry testing apparatus used by the mains branch of the undertaking.

By means of the use of a well -type body it has been possible to provide a low loading line; three channel-form ramps are arranged at the rear so that the wheels of the appliances carried may be run up easily into the trailer and without the risk of slipping sideways. Steel sides to the well are provided and the roof is fixed. The upper portions of the sides are hinged to form shelters for

the workmen ; these flaps can be removed when desired, as can the double doors at the rear. Stays, with hand loops, are provided to secure the sides in the desired position.

At the front end, above the turntable, is mounted a hand-operated winc,h which is used for hauling on board the testing appliances. On a sob of the kind for which this Yorkshire trailer is intended there are many other tasks for which the winch may be helpful, so that it performs more than one useful function.

In front of the winch there is provision for a spare wheel to be carried vertically. All the wheels are of the detachable disc, eight-stud type and carry Dunlop pneumatic tyres. The hubs run on roller bearings.

In order to reduce the frame height two semi-elliptic springs coupled to the rear axle are underslung. In the case of the springs for the forward suspen

sion, they are mounted above the axle.

On the platform above the turntable is the brake lever; this operates in a rack-type quadrant and can, therefore, be left in the " on " position during work, or may be set to give any desired amount of effort during long descents. A volute spring is arranged in the layout of the drawbar ; this cushions the pull when starting, or if the towing vehicle be accelerated or decelerated suddenly.
