• EC hauliers have been assured that rivals from Eastern Europe will have to meet strict maintenance requirements if they want to compete in the Community.

Vehicle checks could be set up on EC borders to monitor maintenance and emission standards on trucks coming from Hungary and Czechoslovakia, says an expert from Germany's vehicle inspection agency: "One could envisage something along Austrian lines," Dr Paul Philipps of DECRA told operators at the European Transport Maintenance Council conference in Antwerp this week.

But he stressed that before such a scheme could be set up, Eastern European hauliers would have to be made aware of EC standards.
