THE " On-The-Car " wheel balancer in the range of Laycock garage equipment made its appearance at the Commercial Motor Show last autumn. A one-piece unit, compact and easily stored, it is on wheels for easy transportation and is suitable for use on light commercials. Complete wheel assemblies, including the hub, can be balanced in a matter of minutes,

The balancer has a built-in braking system, a finger-tip control panel and a " deadman " press button to safeguard the motor. It is supplied with an assortment of weights and weight pliers, which are stored in the main body of the unit.

Balance is achieved by the stroboscopic light method, which is always under the control of the operator and is sufficiently powerful to allow outdoor use of the unit in the brightest of daylight. The drive roller is inclined to allow tyres of any tread pattern to be driven and balanced at speeds up to 100 m.p.h. The operator, sitting astride the machine, can maintain the pressure between the roller and the wheel and direct the best possible light spread on to the wheel.

The transducer pick-up unit mounted on a weighted base is designed for rapid positioning beneath the suspension and has an angular adjustment to allow kinetic and dynamic balance to be checked. The transistorized electronic pack is housed within the main body and the whole unit is enclosed in a glassfibre case. All component parts are easily serviced and the flash tube is readily accessible when replacement becomes necessary.

Another of the company's products, designed specially for commercial vehicle users (as the model title ER-Commercial Balancer No. 70084 indicates), pinpoints unbalance in the dynamic plane by electric impulse readings in grammes. This can be quickly corrected and the wheel then checked in the static plane by gravitational tests. The two operations are simple and speedy.

This balancer is supplied with one flange complete with Stieber hub, four centering pins, one spanner, a set of magnetic weights, pliers, value chart and flange list. Weights from 50 to 300 grammes are boxed. The balancer, which has a 5 h.p. 3-phase electric motor, is 33 in. by 22 in, at the base, which is bolted to the floor. Overall length is 57.75 in. and height, 37.375 in,

Smaller balancers of the same type—for checking wheels off the vehicle—are the DRP •and the ERP, both of which have 0.5 h.p. motors.
