Shields, applied to the Northern Licensing Authority on Monday for a B licence for two tippers, the managing director, Mr. R. Robson, said that he was hiring 40 vehicles or more a day. His expenditure for hiring in January at £301, was almost as much as he had paid in the whole of 1953. There was a great amount of public-works contracting in the district.
When Mr. J. L. R. Croft, for British Road Services, suggested that the applicants were doing work previously undertaken by two B.R.S. vehicles, Mr. Robson said that he was prepared to hire two vehicles from B.R.S. for this and other jobs.
The licence was granted.
